Microsoft realised the power of the Cloud with its ‘Movies & TV’ service.  Microsoft moved the entire 140,000-title video library into Azure.  This move improved streaming quality, increased the speed of new titles releases and optimised video delivery in different parts of the world.

If the business needs to add capacity to serve more video, it can double its serving capacity in minutes versus the days or weeks needed to provision servers on premises. This enables the service to meet peak demand at a lower cost and to expand its server infrastructure in keeping with business growth.

Cloud savings

Moving its streaming infrastructure to the cloud also enabled Microsoft Movies & TV to save money. Using Azure allows the organisation to focus its staff and budget on innovations and activities that make it more competitive rather than on the day-to-day work of running a data centre.  With competitors such as Netflix in the market, this competitive edge is very necessary.

The technology is not especially glamorous (pushing workhorse servers from your own data centre to a third-party data centre), but even that move gives the business exciting new capabilities that enabled it to be more agile in a hyper-competitive marketplace.

Once data and applications are in the Cloud, organisations can take operational efficiency to the next level, beyond knowing what’s happening now in their business to anticipating what will happen next.  These insights are generated using Azure ‘Machine Learning’ predictive analytics, Azure IoT Suite and Cortana Intelligence Suite. When collective data is fed into advanced analytics systems, new insights emerge to drive improvements.

An Organisation Sustaining the four pillars - Royal College of Surgeons

For over 200 years the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) has played a major role in medical education and training in Ireland.  Founded in 1784 to train surgeons, today the college provides extensive education and training in the healthcare professions at undergraduate and postgraduate level. RCSI is ranked among the top 2% of universities worldwide in the 2018 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. 

Disparate systems across the globe

More than 60 countries are represented on RCSI’s international student body. The college has a strong international presence with schools in Malaysia, Dubai and a university in Bahrain.

With ambitious expansion plans around the globe, RCSI had a need to present a single identity to the world. The two main campuses (Dublin and Bahrain) were operating separate ICT systems with distinct ICT departments so a unified image was proving difficult.

Working with Auxilion, RCSI digitally transformed how the college operated on a day-to-day basis. This change ensured that local and international college departments could connect and work together in new collaborative ways, in real time.

A singular, global campus

The college also wanted the ability to very quickly set up offices anywhere in the world that would be linked into a new single ICT system.

Auxilion designed and built a new RCSI Active Directory domain distributed across Bahrain and Dublin by leveraging Microsoft Azure. This provided a single global identity platform for RCSI.

Aside from now projecting a single identity around the world, the transformation project has also facilitated increase collaboration regardless of location, information accessibility across multiple devices, email platform consolidation, reduction in on-premise storage space, reduced office and travel costs and the consolidation of licensing costs.  

RCSI customers (i.e. their students)are more engaged.  RCSI employees are more empowered through collaboration technology and security has been strengthened.
